Peri was still rummaging through the chest. ‘What?’ Her voice was muffled.

‘Why would someone take presents, just to hide them here?’ Aziza tried again. ‘It doesn’t make sense. I think we should be looking outside the palace.’

Peri stood up quickly, a frown on her face. ‘We don’t know why the presents were taken so we need to check everywhere in the palace first.’ She placed her hands on her hips. ‘I do know what I’m doing.’

‘So do I,’ Aziza said. ‘I helped find Ccoa the Ice Cat, remember?’

Peri’s eyebrows shot up. ‘I was there too, you know. You didn’t do it alone.’

‘Look. I’m just trying to help,’ Aziza finally burst out. ‘Being here isn’t going to help.’

Peri crossed her arms. ‘Well just go then. If that’s what you really want.’ Peri’s voice was a bit squeaky.

Aziza could feel her face getting hot and her throat felt tight. ‘Fine. Happy Birthday, Peri.’ She shook her head. ‘All I wanted to do was help.’

‘I’m so sorry, Aziza,’ Peri whispered quietly. ‘I didn’t mean it. I know you’re just trying to help.’

Peri looked so miserable that Aziza couldn’t stay mad at her any more. Aziza remembered how frustrated she’d felt just before coming to Shimmerton. How she’d snapped at Otis.

‘It’s OK,’ she said quietly. ‘I know how you feel.’

Peri’s eyes filled with tears. ‘I’m just so stressed about finding the presents.’

Aziza nodded and gave Peri a quick hug. ‘Let’s keep looking,’ she said, glancing around. ‘What about over there?’ she added and pointed to a large glass cupboard full of tiny statues and other objects like bejewelled bottles and ornately decorated pens.

Together they made their way to the cupboard and began to search. Neither spoke, still feeling a bit awkward.

Peri held up a silver tiara. ‘I forgot all about this,’ she exclaimed. At Aziza’s puzzled look, Peri placed the tiara atop of Aziza’s coily strands. ‘It’s my spare tiara.’
